“Clear out your bank account every day.”

That’s what I heard God say to me a few months back. Actually let me clarify, that’s what I thought I heard God say to me a few months back.  Give it all away by the end of every day and trust God for the daily needs. Yikes. Still deciding whether or not that was His voice or just the three cups of coffee that day, but how cool would that be? Reckless faith…maybe just reckless. I can think of several Bible verses about planning for the future and being prudent (nervous laugh).

But what if that advice applies to our spiritual bank account?

God’s mercies are new every morning. He gives a new day every day with a new start. Most of the time we think this refers to the chance to let go of past mistakes and hurts—and it does. But what if it also means letting go of the accomplishments as well?

Think of all the good things you’ve done. Those times when you actually got it right and prayed for someone at just the right time. Or helped that family with a broken down car. Today I feel God is asking us to truly start new. Am I holding on to those moments? Am I stepping into the new day with my hands full?  Or am I letting go and truly starting new?  What would it look like to lay down the list of things done to further God’s kingdom?

Humbling. It would look like humility.

A new start is a humble start no matter what you are leaving behind. The sinner and the saint both start on level ground in God’s eyes.

I’d like to stand before the throne this morning with nothing. No debt nor wealth in the Kingdom. A truly clean start. Humble because my sins are forgiven and forgotten, and ready because my pride is also released. Hands are empty. Holding neither regrets nor trophies. Ready to work.

Philippians 3:12-14 “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

Forget what lies behind and press on.
